The NEET-UG 2024 exam has been mired in controversies, leading to significant legal actions and student protests. On June 14, 2024, the Supreme Court of India issued notice to the Centre and the National Testing Agency (NTA) in response to allegations of paper leaks and other irregularities in the exam held on May 5.
The court’s decision comes after several petitions seeking a CBI probe into these claims. The NTA, responsible for conducting the exam for aspiring medical students, has been facing scrutiny due to these serious allegations. Notably, 67 students scored full marks, an unprecedented result that further raised suspicions, especially with the six top scorers coming from a single centre in Haryana.
Apart from addressing the alleged leak, the Supreme Court is also scheduled to hear a petition by the NTA requesting the consolidation of various cases pending in multiple high courts. The move is aimed at streamlining the legal process and avoiding repetitive litigation.
Meanwhile, the NTA has decided to cancel the grace marks awarded to 1,563 candidates who faced disruptions during the exam. These students have now been given the option to retake the exam. With the hearing scheduled for July 8, all eyes are on the Supreme Court as it considers these complex issues that could have significant implications on the future of medical entrance exams in India.
