Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani has achieved another milestone as his son Anant Ambani-led Jio Platform has received approval from India’s space regulator to launch satellite internet services. The move puts Jio Platform ahead of global competitors such as Elon Musk’s Starlink and Jeff Bezos’ Kuiper in the race to provide satellite-based internet in India.
Orbit Connect India, a joint venture formed between Jio Platform and Luxembourg’s SES, aims to bring high-speed internet connectivity to rural and remote areas of India. The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has given three crucial approvals, allowing Orbit Connect to install satellites over India. However, additional approvals are required from the Department of Telecommunications before the service can be launched.
As the demand for reliable internet grows, especially in underserved areas, satellite broadband is expected to play a key role. According to Deloitte, India’s satellite broadband market is projected to grow 36% over the next five years, potentially reaching USD 1.9 billion by 2030.
With this development, Mukesh Ambani’s Jio platform is set to revolutionize internet access in India, further strengthening Reliance’s position as a leader in the country’s tech and telecom sectors.
